Breaking the Cauldrons and Sinking the Boats

Reading level: Intermediate

In 207 BC the young general Xiang Yu led his men across a river, destroyed their own boats and cooking pots, and won the battle of Julu against a far larger Qin army. A graded Chinese retelling of one of history’s most famous turning points.

History and legend

The battle of Julu (207 BC) is well attested, but our main source, Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, was written about a century after the events and is famous for its vivid scene-setting. Details such as the exact words spoken are literary reconstruction, not recorded speech. The idiom 破釜沉舟 (“break the cauldrons and sink the boats”) comes from this episode. This retelling and its English translation are original to this site.
