草木皆兵

Every Bush and Tree Looks Like an Enemy

Reading level: Advanced

In 383 the northern ruler Fu Jian marched south to destroy Eastern Jin, boasting that his soldiers could dam the Yangtze with their whips. At the Fei River, fear and overconfidence turned his vast army into a rout — and gave Chinese the idiom

History and legend

The Fei River campaign of 383 and Fu Jian’s defeat are recorded in the Book of Jin, compiled in 648, and in Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian (1084); both drew on earlier histories, and both are public-domain. The size of Fu Jian’s army is almost certainly exaggerated in the sources — the traditional figures of 600,000 infantry and 270,000 cavalry cannot be verified — and the famous scene of him mistaking the trees on Mount Bagong for Jin soldiers is a literary set piece within that tradition. The four-character idioms 草木皆兵 (“every bush and tree looks like an enemy”) and 风声鹤唳 (“wind and crane cries”) were fixed by later usage rather than coined in the sources in exactly that form. This retelling and its English translation are our own.
