纸上谈兵

Fighting a War on Paper

Reading level: Beginner

Zhao Kuo could recite every military classic and win any argument about strategy — but he had never led an army. At Changping his theories met Bai Qi, and Zhao paid for it. A graded retelling with notes on the sources and on the idiom’s “paper”.

  • Records of the Grand Historian (史记 · 白起王翦列传), “Biographies of Bai Qi and Wang Jian”, by Sima Qian — Bai Qi’s side of the battle: his secret appointment, the encirclement at Changping, and the burial of the surrendered Zhao troops; public domain.

History and legend

The Battle of Changping (262–260 BC), the replacement of the veteran Lian Po by Zhao Kuo, and the catastrophe that followed are recorded in Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, written more than a century later, so its speeches and scene-setting are literary reconstruction rather than stenography. The figure of more than 400,000 Zhao soldiers buried alive also comes from the Shiji, and modern historians debate whether it is literal or exaggerated — some argue the total includes camp followers, others that the numbers are rhetorical. The four-character idiom 纸上谈兵 is a much later summary of the story: no such phrase appears in the Shiji, and “paper” is an anachronism, since in the Warring States period people wrote on bamboo and wooden slips. The Chinese retelling and English translation on this page are our own.
