卧薪尝胆

Sleeping on Firewood and Tasting Gall

Reading level: Intermediate

Defeated and humiliated, the King of Yue spent three years as a prisoner, then spent many more quietly rebuilding his state — until he could face his old enemy again. A graded Chinese retelling, with notes on which parts are history and which are legend.

History and legend

The Wu–Yue wars and Goujian’s eventual destruction of Wu are attested by near-contemporary sources (Zuo Zhuan) and by Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian. The detail that Goujian “tasted gall” (尝胆) comes from the Shiji. “Sleeping on firewood” (卧薪), however, appears in no early source: it entered the story roughly a thousand years later in Song-dynasty writing, and the two images were combined into today’s four-character idiom only in later times. Tales added along the way — such as the beauty Xi Shi weakening the king of Wu — are later legend, not recorded history. The Chinese retelling and English translation on this page are our own.
